Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffees
|
For over a hundred years, Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee has been the world’s most prized coffee, fetching the highest prices. It is a coffee of rich flavour and aroma, full body and moderate acidity. And, it is deemed by the coffee experts of the world to possess all characteristics in perfect balance in the cup. As Jamaicans we grew up with Blue Mountain coffee and have been keen supporters of growers and processors on our famous island. Certified "Blue Mountain Coffee" is imported only by importers authorized by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica. J. Martinez has been an authorized importer since 1988 and has led the call for strict labeling and strict quality control of the coffee. For those of you who wish to know more about Blue Mountain Coffee in general, we are working on an informational website that contains some history, information about different Jamaican coffee estates, and the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica. Visit the site here. What Makes a Coffee Blue Mountain Jamaican Coffee? The Blue Mountains, located between Kingston and Port Antonio, are some of the highest mountains in the Caribbean. The mountains get their color and name from the perpetually surrounding mist. The cool climate, abundant rainfall, and rich soil together make the Blue Mountains ideal for growing coffee. Only coffees certified by the Coffee Industry Board may use the “Jamaican Blue Mountain” label. In order to qualify for this label, the coffee must be grown within specific geographic boundaries, must be of a certain minimum size, and cannot exceed a specific percentage of defects. Beware of Blue Mountain Coffee BlendsDespite the strict standards for what can be described as a Blue Mountain Jamaican coffee, many companies will still try to market their coffees that do not meet the requirements as Blue Mountain coffee. One unfortunately common practice is to blend a small amount of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee with lower quality coffee beans to reduce the cost. This practice is harmful to the reputation of Jamaican coffee, and it is also unfair to customers who are paying a premium for what they believe to be Blue Mountain coffee. If you see Blue Mountain coffee being sold at an unusually low price, you can be certain that it is not true Blue Mountain Jamaican coffee. J. Martinez has been an authorized importer of Blue Mountain coffee since 1988, and we sell only 100% officially certified Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. |

The Wallenford Estate coffee is distinguished by fruit in the nose and is brighter in the cup than the Clifton Mount, which we also offer. It is so well-balanced that even those of us used to adulterating our coffee with sugar or milk will find that this coffee is supremely smooth when black.

Clifton Mount Estate is located in the heart of Jamaica's Blue Mountains on the cool and misty slopes of Catherine's Peak. One of the oldest coffee plantations in Jamaica, Clifton Mount has been producing beans of rare quality and aroma since the 1790's. Encouraged by John Martinez, in 2004, a mill was built to process the coffee on the property so that it could be offered as an estate coffee.
