The sacred lotus of the Hindus, Nelumbium nelumbo, is a yellow water lily. In India where the vast majority of the people are Hindus, the lotus is one of four symbols associated with Vishnu, one of the greatest Hindu gods. Vishnu is generally depicted as dark blue in colour, crowned, and bearing his emblems -- one in each of his four hands: the lotus, conch, discus and mace. His consort, Lakshmi, a form of the Mother Goddess associated with prosperity is always portrayed sitting on a lotus, the symbol of fertility that is traditionally associated with her.
