Father's Day

Father's Day was created to complement Mother's Day in the early part of the 20th Century. It was not an immediate hit. Despite the efforts of the YWCA, the YMCA and others it was generally met with derision and satire, much like Dad's parenting efforts are still fodder for comedy in movies today. It wasn't until 1966 that Lyndon B. Johnson issued a Presidential Decree making the third Sunday in June officially Father's Day in the US.

Prior to President Johnson's decree Congress had resisted making Father's Day an official holiday, fearing it would become commercialized. So it is ironic that it may have been the commercial interests of the Associated Men's Wear Retailers that helped keep the holiday alive through the 1930's and 40's. The group even formed a committee to promote the holiday. Retailers, realizing that the holiday was not taken seriously initially, even mocked the day in their own advertisements even while selling the idea that a gift is appropriate on the holiday.

We will not mock Father's Day, though we will willingly satirize our own efforts to convince you that J. Martinez coffee makes a better gift than a tie...And don't forget, Mom will enjoy the gift as well!

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee

Jamaica Blue Mountains Map Our best selling coffee by volume is our most expensive coffee, Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. We know that this is due to our being a trusted source of 100% Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, as well as one of the few merchants that carries two Jamaica Blue Mountain estates, Clifton Mount and Wallenford. But we believe that we sell more because it is a superb coffee.

We are often asked what the difference in the two coffees is, so in the name of science we cupped them both today, medium roast. The two coffees share the Blue Mountain characteristics of being extremely smooth and balanced. Blue Mountain coffee is so smooth it is the easiest coffee we know to consume black. But there are differences in the estates. The Wallenford is distinguished by a bit more fruit on the nose, and is slightly brighter than the Clifton Mount in the cup. The Clifton Mount's aroma provides an initial waft of chocolate and has a slighter "rounder" richness that is very pleasing to the palate.

So if you have not tried our Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee you might consider some for Father's Day. What better way to wake up on Sunday but with a cup of the finest coffee in the world? You can do your own tasting at home with a gift box that includes each coffee, or pair up some coffee with Yoku Moku "Cigare Café au Lait". They are delicious (and these cigars are safe to consume in the house).
