The Finns drink more coffee per capita than any other country, consuming 12 kilos of coffee per year - that's over 26 pounds, or a half pound per person per week. The Scandinavian countries plus the Netherlands have the top six spots! The United States is down in the 26th spot with 4.2 kilos consumed per year per person.Coffee is the world's second most traded commodity by value, after oil. Our coffee, though, is all "specialty" coffee and trades higher than the commodity price, rewarding the higher quality producers. Specialty coffee sales, by dollar value, has doubled since 2001 and now has 50% of the US market. By volume it currently is about 37% of the coffee consumed in the US.
In Saudi Arabia a woman can divorce her husband if he does not supply her with coffee.
Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the Coffee Cantata about a woman addicted to coffee. Despite her father's best efforts, she gets both her coffee and her man in the end. The cantata was written in Leipzig during the coffee frenzy of the early 18th Century.
The first webcam was invented at The University of Cambridge as a way to let researchers in the Systems Group know how much coffee was left in their shared coffee pot. This saved a trip for some of the researchers who were not stationed as close as the others.
Teddy Roosevelt consumed about a gallon of coffee a day. His son stated that the President’s coffee cup was “more in the nature of a bathtub”.
